Dr.Gundu.H.R.Rao, PhD

Dr.Gundu.H.R.Rao is an Emeritus Professor in the Medical School, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. He has been with the University of Minnesota Medical School for over 34 years. He is the founder, CEO of South Asian Society on Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis; Global Alliance of Traditional Health Systems; Mind Body Spirit Society of India; and International Society for Prevention of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis.
He is a scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist dedicated to foster innovation and professional excellence in research and education. His research interests and publications include platelet physiology and pharmacology; cellular activation signaling mechanisms; anti-platelet drug delivery and platelet–biomaterial interactions; pathophysiology and prevention of coronary artery disease; and biochemical and molecular markers for risk assessment for type-2 diabetes.
Dr. Rao graduated from the University of Poona, India in 1959 and received his PhD degree in Entomology from the Kansas State University, Kansas, USA in 1968. After working as a post-doctoral fellow at the Texas A & M University and University of Minnesota, he joined the Department of Pharmacology as an NIH fellow to obtain training in toxicology. He also has faculty appointments in Anesthesiology, Lillehei Heart Institute, and Biomedical Engineering Institute. He is an author or co-author of over 600 publications in his fields of interest. In the past, he has consulted various medical device development companies in the Twin Cities including 3M, Medtronic Inc, St Jude Medical, Medical CV Inc, Vascular Solutions, APP Tech, Endocardial Solutions, PlaCor Inc., Medical Innovations Inc, Hypertension Diagnostics Inc. and Boston Scientific on problems related to biocompatibility, thrombosis and stroke.
He was the visiting Professor in the Royal College of Surgeons, England in the summer of 1987 and in the Thrombosis Research Institute, London in 1988. He taught one summer at the Institute of Human Physiology, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. He also served as Senior Consultant to the Government of India, for three successive years (1990-93), under a United Nations program called TOKTEN. He also served as a Visiting Professor in the Institute of Human Physiology, University of Padua, Italy during 1995-96. He is currently listed as the Senior Fulbright Specialist. Since the founding of SASAT in 1993, he is organizing international symposiums on Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis in India, every other year. He is on the advisory board of many medical, scientific and device development organizations.
